I’ve been in Georgia for a week…and it feels like I’ve been here for months. But in a good way. I’m absolutely loving every minute of my job…except for the bad parts like on-duty scheduling that makes me want to pull my hair out.
My job this summer has been super hard to explain and this is how the conversation generally goes with anyone who asks:
Friend: “So what are you doing this summer?”
Me: “I’m working for Duke University in Georgia.”
Friend: “They have a campus in Georgia?”
Friend: “I’m confused.”
Me: “So, I’m working for a program for gifted 8-10th grade students that Duke created and sponsors. The camps are offered at about 8 university campuses across the nation. I’m working with the residence life aspect of the camp located at the University of Georgia.”
Friend: “Residence Life? So you’re cleaning dorm rooms?”
Me: “No. I’m supervising 16 legit residential counselors who each look after about 14 kiddos. I’m part of a five person admin team and we run the camp for three weeks in June. In July, a new set of campers come and we start all over.”
Friend: “Georgia is hot.”
Me: “I know.”
So that’s what I’m doing. Walking in the heat across campus all day, supporting my fantastic 16-member staff constantly, eating food at dining halls, hanging out with 200 8th-10th graders, and exploring Athens one day a week. And now I would like to take this time to introduce you to the folks I work with:
Meet Lee M.
He is one of my favorite people. He is super smart and is working on his PhD in Counseling…so he’s all about counseling me. And he makes sure I eat protein at every meal.
Meet beautiful Betsy.
I consider her my big sister here…even though she’s younger than me. She’s our office coordinator and super organized. And super cool.
Meet Lee B.
He’s probably one of the coolest people I’ve ever met before. So calm. So collected. I don’t know if you know me, but I can be unbelievably high-strung. This guy calms me down. Soo lucky to have him here.
He’s ridiculous. He’s getting his PhD at the University of Florida and makes sure everyone in Georgia knows he goes there. He’s usually wearing some sort of UF gear everyday, just to get his point across.
She works with Betsy in the office. This is the only pic of her I had, but her birthday is next week so I’m sure I’ll have more to share.
He’s one of the head leaders I supervise. So smart. Really funny. Very tall. I’d be completely lost without him.
Meet Meg M.
Whoa. This girl is incredible. She believes in seeing the beginning of everyday, so she never goes to sleep before midnight. And she’s still peppier than me. Phenomenal girl.
Alright…so those are some members of the Admin team and staff. Oh! And my office. I share an office with Charles.
The lovely Megan helped me decorate.
If you were asking yourself, “is that Justin Bieber in the poster above my desk?”, you’d be correct. This is Megan’s masterpiece:
Aright–Tomorrow the campers get here and I’m so excited!! P-U-M-P-E-D.
